The plug
An Ethernet cable 10/100/1000 base T uses a connector named RJ45, illustrated on the side.
The cable
Only 4 wires (2 pairs) are needed for 10/100baseT straight or crossed cables, while all of the wires (4 pairs, 8 wires) are needed for a 1000baseT cable.
The cable is composed by 4 pairs of wires, twisted, and is named UTPcat5 (Unshielded Twisted Pair category 5).
A 1000baseT cable is UTPcat5e (enhanced) or CAT6.
Overall considerations
• maximum length is 100m
• never keep in the wall close to power cables
• the schemas below are valid for 10/100/1000baseT
